It's common practice is to put a pair of antennas at the inlet and outlet of large metal pipes, or culverts, as shown in the image. The antenna will induce current flow in the metal pipe, called eddy current, which will reduce the effectiveness of the antenna. It's important to keep the antennas away from the pipe a distance greater than the read range of the antenna. Commonly 2 feet or more.
